We left UK on the 23rd August on the M/V Mont St. Michel from Portsmouth to Caen. Despite gales and bad weather up the east coast of UK we had a very good trip across the channel.
I always enjoy sailing out of Portsmouth as there is so much to see.
Spinnaker Tower
Our first major stop was at Saumur on the Loire. The campsite was on an island in the Loire with Saumur chateau looking down on it.
Saumur is home to the Cadre Noir, the National School of Horsemanship, known for its annual horse shows. The Armoured Branch and Cavalry Training School are also located here. There is a tank museum with more than 850 armoured vehicles. Most of them are French.
We did many of the local geocaches – there weren't that many. One of the nearest was this one which was on the 0 degrees Meridian Line (Greenwich Meridian).
Nearby was another cache which took us up a 1:5 hill. Sue managed it, slowly. There was a super view across the Loire Valley. Sue at the church at the top of the hill.
There has been talk of cleaning up the street furniture in UK I think they could do the same in France.
We spent a day out at some troglodyte caves followed by a few geocaches. In the area there are many caves because the rock is soft and cheaper to carve out rather than build something on the surface.
Sue in the bedroom. It was quite cramped in all the rooms.
The frame in the front is a baby walker.
Local windmill – this type is not seen in the UK.
Someone lurking in amongst the sunflowers.
Sue by a lavoir (old laundry). We couldn’t find the geocache that should have been there.
Stuart at another geocache which had brought us to these standing stones in the middle of nowhere.
Saumur Chateau at night.
